What is Vaping?

Although vaping in some form has existed for ages, a lot of people still have confusion on what exactly vaping is and how to vape. There’s no shame if you fall into that category. What’s important is that you do your research using credible sources that actually know what they’re talking about. Consider this a beginner’s guide to vaping!

Is Vaping Better Than Smoking?

A lot of what people do know about vaping is that it’s somewhat comparable to smoking. But how comparable? Is it a better alternative?

Nicotine Consumption

There are several factors to look at if you want to compare the health impacts of vaping and smoking. Firstly, you have to look at nicotine content. Nicotine is known for being the highly-addictive chemical in cigarettes. Although not all vaping products contain nicotine, the vast majority on the market today do.

Comparing the amount of nicotine in a vape to the amount in a cigarette is tricky. The amount of nicotine varies quite a bit from one type of cigarette to the next, but so does the amount that people choose to vape or smoke. So in order to figure out how much nicotine you are consuming, you’ll have to do some math – the number of cigarettes you smoke each day (or week) multiplied by the amount of nicotine in each cigarette.

That being said, nicotine is far from the only chemical found in cigarettes and e-juice. Cigarettes are known to have over 7000 chemicals including hundreds that have a negative impact on your health. Almost 70 of these chemicals can actually cause cancer. A vape has significantly fewer toxic chemicals.

Long-Term Health Effects

The other thing to consider when it comes to the health effects of vaping is the delivery method: smoke vs. vapor. The process of smoking involves combustion which creates more harmful chemicals. Since there’s no combustion with a high-quality vaping device, you can side-step more chemicals that way.

Smoking has a major impact on the entire body and can lead to serious health problems including fatal ones like lung cancer, breast cancer, heart disease, and emphysema. Because the modern vape as we know it is a newer device, the long-term impacts of vaping are still somewhat unclear, but current evidence suggests that vaping is significantly less harmful than smoking traditional tobacco.

So if you currently smoke, picking up a vape may be effective at helping you quit. If you’ve never smoked, you may not find vaping very enjoyable.

Secondhand Effects

Health effects aside, which sensation is more enjoyable totally depends on the individual. People generally think of vaping as less of a nuisance for those around them than smoking. This is because secondhand smoke has a distinct smell and it can cause damaging health effects. Because vapes only release vapor, it’s easier to vape without disturbing others in your vicinity. That being said, you should always ask for permission before you begin vaping around anyone.

How to Vape

If you’ve ever seen someone vape, you might think “That looks easy enough!” but it’s important that you take the time to learn how to prepare your vape and use your vape properly. Vaping is different than smoking. If you vape improperly, you could end up coughing a lot and hurting yourself or you might end up missing out on the effects.

There are generally two methods of vaping that are considered “correct.” The first is mouth-to-lung vaping (MTL). Ideally, you should use a smaller vape with a high-resistance coil and a high concentration of nicotine for MTL. With this type of vaping, you should slowly draw the e-juice vapor into your mouth and hold it there for a few seconds. Open your mouth when you inhale into your lungs and then exhale.

The second type of vaping is called direct-to-lung vaping (DTL) and it works best with larger vapes that have low-resistance coils and a lower concentration of nicotine. You should draw the vapor to your lungs and exhale right away with DTL. Although you’ll get the largest amount of vapor with this method, it’s smoother because you’ll be doing so with less nicotine.

What is a Vape Pen?

Unlike cigarettes that generally look exactly the same, vape devices can come in many shapes and sizes. However, vapes usually have three basic parts: an atomizer, a battery, and an e-liquid. The atomizer itself has two parts: a metal coil and a wick which is usually made from cotton. It’s the battery’s job to heat the coil. Depending on the type of vape you have, the battery may only be able to be used once or it may be rechargeable.

Finally, there’s the e-liquid which is made from nicotine, water, flavoring, and a solvent. They can come in all kinds of flavors! When the e-liquid (also known as e-juice or vape juice) is heated up, it creates vapor.

Of the many styles of vape devices, vape pens are one of the most popular for first-time vapers. Unlike some of the clunkier devices on the market, vape pens are sleek, unassuming, and easily portable. True to their name, they very much resemble a pen. These vapes have a mouthpiece and a tank for the e-liquid. They are also rechargeable.

Although they are usually a pricier type of vape device, the simple design and easy-to-use mechanism make them a favorite for many vapers. When you push a button, the battery turns on, which heats up the e-liquid. Although you should be able to reuse this type of vape, you will need to replace the tank regularly or at least parts of the heating element.
